Training Skills

  • Delivery of a pre-prepared training session on a work-related subject of the delegate’s choice.

Note: The duration of each delegate’s training session depends on the overall course length and the number of participants. An ideal group size is eight.

  • Comprehensive one-on-one and group feedback

Preparing a Training Session

  • Key questions for the trainer to consider in advance
    • Why am I the right person for this?
    • Logistics: What, where, when, how – and how long?
    • Understanding how the answers to these questions influence the structure of the training session
  • Structuring the content:
    • Research – ensuring deep knowledge of the subject
    • Organising the content in a logical order
    • Creating and using complementary visual aids

Preparing the Trainer

  • Three fundamental communication tools for trainers:
    • Verbal – the words chosen, avoiding slang and jargon
    • Vocal – the tone of voice, avoiding distracting verbal tics and unnecessary punctuations
    • Visual – the presenter’s appearance: attire; mannerisms; presence
  • Rehearsing the training session and seeking honest feedback from a trusted source
  • Managing nerves

Preparing the Environment

  • Room layouts – and how they convey underlying messages to attendees
  • Using the room to enhance the training experience
  • Ensuring the space is tidy after the course

Evaluation

  • The importance of evaluation
  • Processes for obtaining and utilising delegate feedback

  • Delivery of another training session (after sufficient preparation time).
